I.The Introduction Of  Singapore  Ship mail

SHIPMAIL cover from Singapore with PAQUEBOT  Singapore postmark type 3 send on the High Seas at S.S. SIBAYAK ship (no postmark, because send at Singapore Port) to Indonesia BUTITENZORG  (now Bogor) CDS 6.12.1937. The other type  look at SHIPMAIL 1 and 2.

Five type Singapore Post MARK , Si-S2 straight line and S3-5 combine with port  name (Singapore)-Brig.M.A Studd’s work published only 200 copies.”PAQUEBOT  and SHIP LETTER  Cancellations of the world 1894-1951.M.A.Studd.

One of  unique postal history were the SHIPMAIL postmark when letters posted on the High Seas on the ship DEPARTURE from Singapore  and destination at Indonesia port. Many collectors asked me why Straits stamps from Perak and Johor were cancelled Singapore , Straits stamps were cancelled Indonesia (DEI) port or city cancelled (used abroad) and why the letter from Singapore cancelled with KPM (Dutch East indie Royal Ship) beside Paquebot stright line and PAQUEBOT  Singapore ?

Rules for letters posted on the HighSeas were drown up at the Postal union Conference in 1891. The used of the world “PAQUEBOT” was officially adopted at the UPU Congress ,Whasington.USA in 1897 for international use on correspondence posted on the HighSeas and handed over to the Postal administration at the first port of call.

Brief  the rules are : letters posted on the High seas bearing the stamps of the country in which the ship registered will accepted at the first port of call in any country for onward transmisssion to another member country of the UPU without further charge.

The stamp(s) should be cancelled with the chancellor  of the port and the indicator mark “PAQUEBOT” applied alongside. The letters posted on the High Seas are to be handed over to the postal authorities immediately on arrival, they should not be posted in a shore  side letter box.

Many variation were found, Singapore have 2 type straight line PAQUEBOT Mark type 1 and 2, beside that 3 type PAQUEBOT   combined Port’s name “PAQUEBOT -Singapore”  postmark type S3,4, and 5.

Pre war Singapore PAQUEBOT  postmark S4 and S5 very shortly used after the reoccupation (rare0, and some of destination postmark (Indonesia port) on Singapore departure ship without PAQUEBOT Postmark (Used abroad).

I hope after look carefully at the illustration from SHIP MAIL  1 ( with Singapore PAQUEBOT or KPM-Dutch east Indie (Indonesia) royal ship postmark, and SHIP MAIL h 2 : Indonesia (DEI) port only postmark without PAQUEBOT mark  , all the collector will understand and have the answer why other country stamps used in other country (Used abroad) with or without PAQUEBOT  postmark. This collection were the Marine ship collection thematic , became popular among the  Marine persons as the memorable of te ship where he/she or their family ever  work or travel and write  the letters on the high seas. Now everybody travel via AEROPLANE  and PAQUEBOT  mark never seen anymore. The last PAQUEBOT  letters circa 1970, a ship route from Singapore to Indonesia , like Medan (Belawan) ,Jakarta (TandjongPriok) should used her country’s stamps at the Port Belawan or Tandjong Priok  but Indonesia Stamps at Medan or Jakarta

A.INTRODUCTION.
I. THE BRITISH COLONIES IN THE POST WAR WORLD II(james, laurance, little brown ,Great Britain,lancaster,1994)
The history of what out to be the final decades of the British empire was largely determined by the course of the Cold War.It began in the winter of 1944-5,when British and American strategies began to get the jitters abaout the extent and purpose of trhe formidable buil-up of Soviet military strength .British apprehension about Russias future behaviour was focussed on threrats to the empire, and they asumed a disturbing substance during the first half of 1946,when Russia demanded bases in Lybia and the Dardanelles, and refused to evacuate nothern Persia.Soviet attacks on British policy in the Mediterranean,India,Persia and Indonesia(DEI-Nica) during the first Unitad Nation meeting in February 1946.There had been signs of a change of heart during the winter 1944-45 ,after roosevelt (USA president) had relaxed his objections toward Frances repossesion of Indochina. There were substantial Communist, anti Japanese resistance movement there(Vietminh,Ho Chi-minh) and in Malaya. Both had a vast poptential for subversion, and it was ,therefore, politically prudent to allow the re-occupation of both colonies by their former rulers.
This wa unfair but understandable . Hving set its heart on a new Jerusalen in Britain,Labour was busy setting up smaller Jerusalemin the colonies. There is in Kenya a civilization of the dominant race, suppoted by chep labourand that kind of society is intolerable. announced Creech Jones, although as Colonial SEcretary from 1946 onwards he did little to change matters. He did, however ,frighten white settler in Africa and they were relieved when the Conservatives won the October 1951 general election.
The Midddle east oilfields were taking up the spiralling demand for oil by 1950-1951, and after a period of rapid development ,they were producing 70% of the WEsts requirements.Britain had traditionally been the dominant power in this region.

Two non-white dominons,India and Ceylon, refused to become Britains allies in the Cold war,Burma left the commenwealth in 1948,having become a republic, and was followee by Ireland, also now republic.
In 1949 Idi adopted a republican constitution ,remained a memeber of a commenwealth . The reason for permitting thsi anomaly was the fear that India, once outside the Commonwelath ,migt easily slide into the Communist block. Pakistan joined anti-Soviet Baghdad Pact in 1955.

At late ass November 1957, patrols of the The African King rifles tramped through remote district of Kenya to remind Suk and Turkana tribesman of the retribution in store for lawbreaker. Deonstrations of rifle and Bren ggun fire were mounted for parties of Tribesman and after one, which included the explosion of granates, nothing mush seened to have changed in fifty year. Areal policing continued in the hinterland of Aden where sixty-sin tons of bombs and 247 rockets were needed to punish caravan raiders and stop an inter-tribal war in 1947. That same year a revival of tribal feuding left several hundred dead and wounded in Somaliland, a protectorate where British rule had only been fully installed in 1920.
Colonial authority was also fragile in another volatile outpost, the Solomon Island. After the end of the Japanese occupation,a substantial body of natives had vitually declared independence.
II. THE DEMOCRACY IN BRITISH COLONIES IN 1955(kirk,grayson DR,Dutton&Co,New york,1955)
To understand the real nature of democracy we must examine it as it appears in many parts of the world (espeacilly in the British colonies-Dr Iwan S).DEmocrasy is in thepeople who create it and in the principles by which they live. Because it is the direct product of all its citizen,no democratic society has achieved perfection nor turned all of its ideals into reality. Its citizens are human beeings, each with traits, each with bad. ( we can look at the wie, tghe foolish, the kind or the vicious, the trustworthy, the irresponsible, the spiritual, the materialistic,)’
In a truly democratic country, ancient family ties are not violated, if he chooses .a man can make friwnds with his neighbormwithour anxiety or distrust,he can express his friendliness or compassioan towaard people of other land,he can worship the unknown power of the universe in his own fashion, he can disagree which his neighbor and critize his government, he can peruse the wisdom of the past and the knowledge of today without having it censores for hism, he holds firmly to his free voting previlege,he support programs to lift the dignity and the standard of living of all human being. He opposes aggretion but believes indefense against attack from without or from within. He can find time for joy and realxation,he is convinced peace can be reached trough the cooperation of men in many lands. He believes in mankinds right to change.

SAMPLE INFORMATIONS

1. THE SPERATI FAKE OR FORGERIES STAMPS

                                Renewed interest in Sperati forgeries.

On January 24 in Melbourne, Prestige Philately sold a “used” Sperati forgery of the £2 Kangaroo for over $4,000.This is a very high price for a stamp that only a few short years back would  etc….etc……
Most stamp forgeries are worth LESS than the genuine stamps they copy. Jean Sperati is the main exception to this general rule.As far as I am aware there were only four Sperati reproductions that came from this part of world. They all sell for MORE than the genuine stamps, and indeed in the cases of 3 of the 4 stamps – about TEN times the cost of the genuine stamp.

Sperati fake        Original stamps

This £2 Kangaroo is by far the most “common” of the four as several dozen exist – mostly “used”. The other three forgeries…etc…etc…….
I have been privileged to have handled 2 of these 3 in recent times, and given the renewed interest in Sperati at Auction thought I’d outline for a wider readership a little more about this amazing man and his fakes.Jean de Sperati is universally regarded as the finest and most dangerous stamp forger ever to have lived. He was born in Italy in 1884 and died in 1957, living most of his life in France.
Sperati holding purchased for a fortune by BPA.

His material was so dangerous the late Robson (“Robbie”) Lowe – on behalf of the British Philatelic Association decided to protect philately and purchased his “stock” and printing blocks etc in 1953. They paid a sum said to be $US40,000 ….etc…etc…..
As a valid comparison of what $US40,000 would buy in that era, Harmers London sold the entire ‘T.E Field’ collection of Australian Commonwealth in 1948 for £7,500. This amazing collection contained masses of proofs, essay, and £1 and £2 Kangaroos by ….etc….etc……..
I am proud to have a copy of that “Field” sale catalogue – kindly given to be by veteran Sydney dealer Ken Baker. The finest collection of the Commonwealth ever offered to that time. I predict ….etc….etc………
Baker purchased it on behalf of wealthy Australian grazier J.A. (Jack) Kilfoyle. Ken told me he showed the auction sale catalogue to Kilfoyle when it arrived. Kilfoyle said: “buy them all for me Ken – I want the lot -…etc……etc………
I also have the letter from Harmers to other bidders dated 5 November 1948 advising the whole collection had been sold to Baker for £7,500. “We hope that clients etc…..etc………..
Sold in 1961 for £250this sold last year for $217,898
Kilfoyle collection.etc…….atc……..
There were high value roos there by the THOUSANDS. There were no less than 500 of the £2 Roos 1st and 3rd watermarks alone – many mint, monograms, imprints etc. There were 27 albums purely of Kangaroo stamps! Proofs, essays, Monograms, sheets, and major printing errors etc.Sperati is best known in Australia for his excellent 1913 £2 Kangaroo forgeries of which dozens are in collector hands. Despite the relatively large number of this particular fake, they still sell for many $A1000s each and are highly sought whenever they are offered.
Interest in Sperati continues unabated. The Royal Philatelic Society London has published two excellent books on this man’s masterpieces, authored by Robson Lowe and Carl Walske. The last volume of 218 pages published in very recent times. New discoveries were reported in these volumes after examining the holdings of the Musee de la Poste in Paris who held material hitherto not seen by collectors.
Sperati fools the authorities.
Sperati was so good, a mailing of 18 forgeries addressed to Spain was seized in 1943 by French Customs who has them assessed as being all genuine. He was arrested on a charge of ‘exporting capital’ estimated at being worth 300,000 Francs without a permit, and was summonsed to appear in court. Exporting forgeries was at the time legal if sold and identified as such, and free of duty or taxes. Sperati would “sign” each very lightly on the reverse “facsimile” with easily erasable pencil, thus complying with the law!
Jean Sperati was a master craftsman, and produced very small numbers of meticulous masterpieces, rather than the masses of low quality JUNK quality material manufactured by Panelli, Spiro Brothers and Fournier etc. He had an intense interest and background in chemistry and associated areas, so he was able to make his fakes from GENUINE stamps. This is a very dangerous technique, as the paper, size, cancel, perforations and indeed some of the design were all then 100% genuine.

They are catalogued in the now HOPELESSLY out of date ACSC “Kangaroos”volume at $2,500 “used” which is MORE than a genuine
1913 £2 Roo is catalogued at – and that is of course Australian’s most valuable regular issued postage stamp. (‘Mint’ Sperati Roos are in ACSC at $4,000 and also would now sell for well over this sum. $7,000-$10,000 for the next one to be offered would not surprise me one bit.)
a heavy parcel!
This was originally a ½d Green Kangaroo which had the green colour bleached right out – but he left the postmark intact. And of course the perforations, paper and watermark are also all genuine.
This £2 Kangaroo was the ONLY stamp of the Australian Commonwealth ever forged by Sperati.
The differences from the genuine, as in all Sperati forgeries, are microscopic. The forgery is just so good it would be accepted by 99.9999% of dealers and collectors without comment as the genuine article. It was indeed so good it fooled the RPSL and Sir John Wilson!
Jean de Sperati was very incredibly clever in that he faded or bleached all of the design (or in this unique example, part of the design) of a genuine but low value stamp, and then printed his new design over the top. This way he ended up with the correct paper, size, perforations, watermark, and cancel (Although on this copy, the barred numerical cancel is understood to be a superb fake as well!)This stamp was sold with the RPS Certificate verifying (wrongly) that this is a genuine stamp.
Possibly unique Tasmania £1 “Tablet” Sperati.
The only copy of this forgery I have seen.

As a shameless plug, I’ll mention that the stamps dealer  have in stock the Sperati forgery of the Tasmania £1 1892 green and gold Queen Victoria “Tablet” issue. It is “used” with a genuine circular cancel “Hobart Tasmania APR – 1901”, and is the ONLY example of this stamp ever seen by myself or most large dealers I have mentioned it to.

This exact stamp the stamps dealer  have in stock is illustrated in the BPA superb book on the Sperati forgeries, and the Harold Bynoff-Smith Forgeries volume. It is believed to have been a “one-off” attempt and Sperati it seems abandoned the idea of making more copies, after this absolute perfectionist decided he could not 100% accurately colour match the “real thing”.
The stamp is back-stamped with the violet BPA horseshoe: “Sperati – Reproduction” and is reference stamp numbered “169” also on reverse. The stamp is also signed/autographed in pencil diagonally on reverse – “Jean Sperati.” The appearance and centering is most attractive.
The Stamp dealer have  bought it years ago when Bynoff-Smith dispersed his collection, and had “lost” it for years in my 3 stories of junk here. It only surfaced this week – almost got tossed into a junk box along with some 1980s FDC actually! Some things are better misplaced, especially things in the high end of Australian stamps, as the market is red hot for these now, as recent magazines have outlined.
The stamp dealer  had no real idea on how to price it. Gary Watson’s Prestige Philately in Melbourne auctioned a normal used £2 Sperati Kangaroo for over $4,000 on 24 January 2004 as mentioned above. Dozens of those exist. The possibly unique Tasmania £1 might well be a $10,000 hammer item the way Prestige Philately is setting records lately, but I almost never auction anything.
The stamp dealer settled on the same price the Sperati £2 Roo just sold for, and for a possibly unique Sperati, think that is a pretty sensible level.

Western Australia £1 Orange Sperati

The only other known Sperati forgery from this part of the world is the Western Australia £1 Orange Queen Victoria, 1902-1911 V over Crown watermark.
This is a stamp I have never seen offered, even at auction. Rodney Perry told me years ago it would readily sell for TEN times a genuine £1 Western Australia – itself a fairly scarce and expensive stamp. Today I would not be surprised to see it get 15 or 20 times a normal £1 if one were offered.

The Western Australia Sperati is SO good there is one way to tell it from the genuine – it is BETTER printed!

The superb WASG handbook “Western Australia – The Stamp and Postal History” covers this forgery on page 296.

Sperati was such an perfectionist he took a clear image off a genuine £1 stamp and then RETOUCHED out minute colour spots found on all genuine £1 Queen Victoria copies.

Therefore the GENUINE show six specific little solid colour pinpoint dots that were meticulously retouched out by Sperati
_____________________________________________________________

This forgery sold for over $4,000 in January.
BNG 1901 2/6d Lakatoi forgery. Perversely, the stamp has an old 1939 Royal Philatelic Society London Certificate (signed by the keeper of the Royal Collection, Sir John Wilson!) saying it is a genuine SG #14b (today this has been re-numbered by Gibbons as SG #16 – Cat. £2,500). That Certificate and opinion is wrong, and again shows slavish obedience to Certificates can be costly, as the fake is worth MORE than a genuine SG #16! It is a Sperati forgery, and is quite possibly the only one now existing. Interestingly the Certificate is dated well BEFORE Sperati’s activities became widely known.

I.DR IWANS NOTES
During my younger age , I have many friends with the Italian priest in Padang, they gave me many Italian stamps and some of the Rare Republic Italian stamps will installed for my Italian cstamps collectors all over the wold. The rare stamps have not only from the priest but also found at Jakarta Phillatelic center circa1990- 2000.firdt in Cikini post office and later in Ex Pasar Baru central post office now became the phillatelic museum.msny rare postal history not beutiful grapic design but some very best design especially related to the stamp centenary, the famous man, sport , interpol, radio television and the visit of Italian president to Brazil and peru, be careful many beutiful graphic stamps issued after 1970 very common and nonvaluable stamps because issued more than 100.000.000 items because that time too many speculatio on stamps, before 1970 especially thew 55 cent stamps always in blue color very limited editions because not many used and the economic situation after the WW II which made economic crisis no one speculations or invest in stamps like this day the same situation who want to invest in stamps no money enough to buy one series up than 10 US$, if the colectors have enough money I suggest to invent the high nominal value stamps on postally used cover as 10 pound,50 dollars,50 euro,1000 yen etc on postally used cover twnety years later when the economic situation became good this investation will be very rare and high value, like I done in 1979-1980,when German economic crisis the German and Switzerland stamps very cheapest, and now the value became up more than 20 times.
This my tips for the beginner collectors, please clic my blog every weeks and you will seen the new informations.
